Former United States Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, has strongly criticized the U.S. government following the controversial denial of entry to Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan, who was scheduled to officiate at the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Clinton described the decision as “backward” and harmful to international relations, arguing that a country hosting the world’s biggest football tournament should not prevent officials from carrying out their duties.
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), Clinton said:
“As a World Cup host, the U.S. shouldn’t be flippantly barring officials from entering the country to do their jobs. It’s terribly backward and counterproductive. Global sports competitions should improve international exchange and relations, not the reverse.”
The controversy erupted after Artan, a highly respected Somali referee and the 2025 CAF Referee of the Year, was denied entry upon arrival at Miami International Airport despite reportedly possessing valid travel documents and a FIFA-accredited visa.
FIFA confirmed that Artan would be unable to participate in the tournament after U.S. immigration authorities refused him entry and deported him back to Istanbul, Turkey.
According to reports, Artan underwent an 11-hour immigration interview before being detained and eventually deported. Speaking on the incident, the disappointed referee said he had fulfilled all travel requirements.
“I had the right papers and everything. I had the right visa. I am very disappointed. Officiating at the World Cup was the biggest dream of my life,” Artan stated.
The decision has triggered widespread condemnation from football stakeholders and international observers. Somali sports officials insist that Artan traveled with valid documentation and accuse U.S. authorities of undermining football’s principles of fairness and inclusion.
Former England striker Ian Wright also condemned the development, describing the tournament as a “World Cup of chaos.” He questioned the treatment of players, officials, journalists, and fans facing visa and immigration-related difficulties ahead of the competition.
The controversy comes amid increasing criticism of U.S. immigration policies during the World Cup, with additional reports emerging of strict security checks involving players and officials from several participating nations.
Many football supporters and human rights advocates warn that such actions could damage the spirit of unity, inclusiveness, and international cooperation that the FIFA World Cup is meant to promote.
