The leadership crisis within the (PDP) has taken a new turn as a faction aligned with announced a fresh caretaker leadership for the party.
At a parallel 103rd National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held in Abuja on Monday, the Makinde-backed group approved the formation of a 13-member Caretaker Committee. The committee is to be led by as chairman.
The motion to constitute the caretaker body was moved by and seconded by party chieftain .
Other members of the committee include Taofeek Arapaja, who will serve as National Secretary, alongside Daniel Ambrose, Hamza Abuya, Ihediwa, Isah Abubakar, Theophilus Dakashan, Ini Ememobong, Aribisala Adewale Idowu, Baru Shaffi, and Okechukwu Obiechina.
The latest move comes amid ongoing turmoil within the opposition party following a recent ruling by the , which disrupted the party’s leadership structure.
Earlier, the PDP Board of Trustees (BoT), led by , declared itself the interim authority of the party. The board said its decision was aimed at preventing a leadership vacuum after the court nullified key party organs, including outcomes from the November 2025 National Convention in Ibadan.
The BoT also upheld the suspension of key party officials, including , Umar Bature, and Kamaldeen Ajibade, and declared actions taken by the previous leadership as null and void.
According to the board, it has assumed control of the party’s affairs pending the formation of a new interim structure that will stabilize the PDP and prepare it for future elections, including the 2027 general polls.
With parallel decisions now emerging from different factions, concerns are mounting over deepening divisions within the PDP and the potential impact on its position as Nigeria’s leading opposition party.
