Shock in South Africa as Human Remains Found Inside Crocodile Amid Search for Missing Businessman

Authorities in have launched an intensive investigation after human remains were discovered inside a crocodile during the search for a missing businessman.

The grim discovery was made near Komatipoort, a town in , close to the and the border with Mozambique.

According to police, the remains were recovered from a crocodile found in the Komati River following a week-long search operation for a 59-year-old businessman from Gauteng who had been reported missing.

Spokesperson for the , Colonel Mavela Masondo, confirmed that a joint rescue team had been deployed to locate the missing man after his vehicle—a Ford Ranger—was discovered abandoned at a low-lying bridge near the river.

During the operation, search teams identified a crocodile suspected to have been involved in the incident. Authorities subsequently obtained permission to euthanize the animal, leading to the recovery of human remains from its stomach.

“Following a week-long search, the team identified a crocodile believed to have carried out the attack. After necessary procedures, the remains were retrieved,” Masondo stated.

Officials say DNA testing will be conducted to determine whether the remains belong to the missing businessman.

The operation involved multiple agencies, including search and rescue units, environmental authorities, and emergency services, reflecting the scale and urgency of the investigation.

Meanwhile, video footage showing the crocodile being airlifted from the river by helicopter has surfaced online, drawing widespread attention.

Acting provincial police commissioner, Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi, commended the coordinated efforts of all agencies involved.

As investigations continue, authorities have urged the public to remain cautious around wildlife areas, particularly in regions known for dangerous animals.
