Fresh controversy has erupted within the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) following allegations of irregularities in the party’s House of Representatives primary election for Awka North and South Federal Constituency.
One of the aspirants, Engineer Chukwuebuka Akubueze, has openly challenged the outcome of the exercise, calling on the party’s national leadership to investigate the process and ensure justice is served.
Akubueze, a former student leader seeking the NDC ticket for the House of Representatives, expressed concerns over what he described as inconsistencies in the conduct of the primary election and the implementation of the party’s Option A4 voting system.
In a strongly worded statement, the aspirant questioned figures associated with the election outcome, asking, “How can 17 be greater than 3,478?” — a remark widely interpreted as a challenge to the credibility of the declared results.
He further alleged that the voting exercise, originally scheduled to take place at Ndichie’s Place in Awka, was moved to another location reportedly linked to one of the contestants. According to him, he was also denied access to a venue in Awka South where election-related activities allegedly occurred.
To support his claims, Akubueze released video evidence on social media. He said one video showed the venue where he was allegedly prevented from gaining access, while another captured the vote-counting process in Awka North.
“I ask no one to simply believe my account. Let the public examine the evidence and draw their own conclusions,” he stated.
The aspirant maintained that his concerns go beyond personal ambition, insisting that the issue affects the credibility of internal party democracy, transparency, and the integrity of the candidate selection process.
He urged the NDC national leadership to thoroughly review the circumstances surrounding the primary election and ensure that the wishes of party members are respected.
The dispute has intensified ongoing debates within the NDC, which has recently faced similar allegations of irregularities and candidate imposition in several states, including Imo and Lagos.
Despite the accusations, the party’s National Secretary, Morgan Enekweizu, has defended the conduct of the primaries, insisting that the NDC adopted a consensus-based approach and did not impose candidates. He advised aggrieved members to seek redress through the party’s official appeal mechanisms.
The latest controversy comes at a time when the NDC leadership is also working to resolve internal disagreements in Kano State, where tensions among party stakeholders have threatened unity ahead of future political activities.
Political observers say the outcome of the Awka North and South Federal Constituency dispute could become a major test of the NDC’s commitment to transparency, fairness, and internal democracy as preparations for future elections gather momentum.
