The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has travelled to the United Kingdom to attend his son’s graduation at King’s College London, even as government offices across Abuja and the FCT remain shut due to an indefinite workers’ strike.

The trip comes at a time when activities at the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) have been paralysed following the withdrawal of services by workers under the Joint Union Action Committee (JUAC).

On Monday, offices across the FCT were largely deserted after the unions commenced an indefinite strike over unresolved labour issues. The workers accused the FCTA of failing to address long-standing grievances, including the non-payment of wage awards and promotion arrears, delayed promotions, and the alleged illegal retention of retired directors and permanent secretaries beyond their statutory service years.

Other concerns raised by the unions include the alleged failure to remit pension contributions and National Housing Fund (NHF) deductions, worsening working conditions, and reported intimidation of staff.

Despite the shutdown of government operations in the nation’s capital, the FCT Minister was in London for a personal engagement. On Thursday, Wike confirmed via his official Facebook page that he attended his son’s graduation ceremony.

“Grateful to God for giving me, my wife and children the opportunity to be available to share with my son, Joaquin, his moment of joy as he earned an MSc Degree in Management and Technology Change at King’s College London,” Wike wrote.

The minister also acknowledged the presence of political associates and allies who joined his family to celebrate the occasion, including the Governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri; Chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa; and the PDP National Vice Chairman (South-South), Chief Dan Orbih.

Confirming the development, Wike’s media aide, Lere Olayinka, stated that Joaquin Wike successfully completed an MSc Degree in Management and Technology Change at King’s College London.
