Former Minister of Transportation and ex-Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, has strongly criticised Nigeria’s political class, declaring that politicians will continue looting public funds unless Nigerians rise to demand accountability.
Amaechi made the explosive remarks during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time, where he expressed deep concern over what he described as the gradual collapse of governance in Nigeria.
According to the former governor, many politicians have continued to enrich themselves while ordinary Nigerians suffer from worsening poverty, economic hardship, and insecurity.
“As a governor of Rivers State at Freedom House during an event organised by Prof. Wole Soyinka, I told Nigerians that we politicians will not stop stealing if Nigerians don’t stone us,” Amaechi stated.
The former APC presidential aspirant lamented that the political system has failed millions of citizens, insisting that bad governance and corruption remain major reasons for the country’s growing challenges.
Amaechi, however, noted that not every politician is corrupt, describing himself as “a different politician” while also acknowledging that some governors across the country have made positive contributions in governance.
“There are still some good politicians and governors doing well, but governance is slowly dying and it is painful,” he added.
His comments come at a time many Nigerians are expressing frustration over rising inflation, unemployment, insecurity, and the increasing cost of living nationwide.
Amaechi, who recently aligned with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) after leaving the APC presidential race, has in recent months become increasingly vocal about the state of the nation and leadership failures in Nigeria.
The statement has since sparked reactions across social media and political circles, with many Nigerians debating the role of citizens and leaders in the country’s deepening economic and governance crisis.
