ABUJA — Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has thrown his weight behind the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) over its concerns about the worsening security situation in the country, while calling on Muslim organizations to join the demand for urgent government action.
The former vice president made the call on Wednesday following the release of a communiqué by CAN after its 2026 National Church Leaders Summit held in Abuja.
Atiku expressed support for the Christian body’s position, stating that the country’s escalating insecurity requires immediate attention and stronger intervention from the Federal Government.
According to him, the recommendations contained in the communiqué—including a comprehensive review of Nigeria’s security architecture, improved intelligence gathering, stronger collaboration among security agencies, and greater accountability—reflect concerns he has consistently raised regarding the nation’s security challenges.
“I have just read the communiqué released by the Christian Association of Nigeria under the leadership of Archbishop Daniel Okoh, and I align with the concern and sympathies of the Church in Nigeria over the security of the lives of Nigerians,” Atiku stated.
In its communiqué, CAN urged Nigerian leaders to prioritize the safety and welfare of citizens above political interests and early election activities.
The Christian body also called for the immediate release of kidnapped schoolchildren, teachers, and other Nigerians currently being held captive by criminal groups across the country. CAN further appealed to security agencies to intensify rescue operations until all victims regain their freedom.
The association emphasized that national peace, public safety, and trust in government should remain the top priorities of political leaders at all levels.
Atiku praised Christian leaders from various denominations for speaking with one voice on the issue, describing their united stance as a powerful wake-up call to the nation’s political leadership.
He noted that the declaration of a three-day period of national mourning by Christian leaders should encourage reflection among public office holders, especially those responsible for ensuring the security of Nigerians.
According to him, the country’s security crisis affects citizens regardless of religion, ethnicity, or region, making it a national challenge that requires collective action.
The former vice president urged Muslim organizations and other faith-based groups to lend their voices to the growing calls for urgent reforms and decisive action against insecurity.
“I enjoin other faith organisations, especially those within the Muslim community, to lend their voices to this wake-up call,” he said.
Atiku stressed that the fight against insecurity should transcend religious and political divisions, emphasizing the need for a united national response.
He also called on President Bola Tinubu to listen to the concerns being raised by CAN and other stakeholders, urging the administration to take practical steps to address terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and violent crime.
Atiku maintained that Nigerians are looking beyond political rhetoric and expect concrete measures capable of restoring peace, protecting lives, and rebuilding confidence in the nation’s security institutions.
