Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has raised fresh concerns over the country’s economic outlook, warning that the ongoing crisis in the Middle East could trigger a new wave of inflation and further erode the purchasing power of Nigerians.
Speaking during an Eid-el-Fitr gathering at his Lagos residence, where he hosted Vice President Kashim Shettima and 23 state governors, the President stressed the need for urgent action to protect vulnerable citizens from the looming economic impact.
According to a statement released by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu revealed that his recent three-day state visit to the United Kingdom was strategically focused on strengthening security partnerships and acquiring advanced security technology.
During the visit, the Nigerian leader met with Charles III and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, in talks aimed at boosting international cooperation.
However, beyond security, Tinubu emphasized that escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East pose a direct threat to Nigeria’s economy, particularly through rising global energy costs that could fuel inflation.
“We must care more for the vulnerable. This Middle East crisis will spike inflation and affect our purchasing power,” Tinubu stated. “Labour unions and other groups will naturally demand more support as the impact unfolds.”
The President urged state governors to move beyond political rhetoric and implement practical policies that will ease the burden of rising transportation and energy costs on citizens.
He also called for stronger collaboration between federal and state governments to tackle insecurity nationwide, describing criminal activities as a “tyranny” that must be decisively confronted.
Tinubu commended Vice President Shettima for his recent visit to Borno State to sympathize with victims of insecurity, assuring Nigerians that the government is set to deploy modern technology to improve national safety.
Speaking on behalf of the governors, Chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum and Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, described Tinubu’s UK trip as bold and impactful for Nigeria’s foreign relations.
He further disclosed that discussions on the establishment of state policing are ongoing, with proposals expected to be submitted to the National Assembly soon.
