The West African Bar Association (WABA) has strongly criticised a Federal High Court judge in Abuja over an incident in which a lawyer was allegedly ordered to kneel during court proceedings, describing the act as degrading and a threat to the integrity of the legal profession.
In a statement released on March 24, WABA expressed deep concern over the treatment of the lawyer, Barrister Marshal Abubakar, who was representing human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, at the time of the incident.
The regional legal body, led by Acting President Bornor Varmah and Secretary-General Adesina Adegbite, described the judge’s action as a “serious violation” of judicial ethics and a direct affront to the dignity of the legal profession.
According to WABA, courtrooms must remain places where respect, fairness, and dignity are upheld for all participants, including judges, lawyers, litigants, and observers. The association warned that any form of humiliation within the courtroom risks eroding public trust in the judiciary.
“Subjecting a legal practitioner to degrading treatment undermines the rule of law and weakens confidence in the justice system,” the statement noted.
WABA further emphasised that while judges have the authority to maintain order in court, such powers must be exercised responsibly, within legal boundaries, and with full respect for human dignity.
The association also stressed the importance of protecting the independence of legal practitioners, stating that lawyers must be able to carry out their duties without fear of intimidation, harassment, or arbitrary sanctions.
In response to the incident, WABA has called on the National Judicial Council (NJC) to launch an immediate investigation and take appropriate disciplinary action against the judge involved.
The body also expressed solidarity with Barrister Abubakar, while reminding legal practitioners of the need to maintain professionalism and respect toward the bench at all times.
The incident has since sparked widespread reactions within Nigeria’s legal community, with growing calls for accountability and stricter adherence to judicial conduct standards across the country.
