The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has come under intense scrutiny after admitting it was unaware of disturbing allegations of sexual violence linked to a controversial festival in Ozoro, Delta State.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the agency attributed its failure to detect the incident to the absence of an operational command in Delta State, raising serious concerns about gaps in Nigeria’s institutional response to gender-based violence.
The shocking revelation followed public outrage, particularly on social media, where Nigerians questioned how such alleged abuses could persist unnoticed for years. A Facebook user, Chukwunenye Nweke, challenged the agency’s effectiveness, asking whether the festival had only just begun or had been ignored over time.
Responding, NAPTIP stated that its reach is limited, emphasizing that it “cannot be everywhere at all times,” and confirmed that it currently has no command structure in Delta State. The agency also urged citizens to play a more active role by reporting crimes and raising awareness about human trafficking and sexual abuse.
Despite its admission, NAPTIP strongly condemned the incident, describing it as a grave violation of human rights and an example of gender-based violence that must not be tolerated in any society.
Meanwhile, the Delta State Police Command has taken action, arresting several suspects, including alleged organisers and some community figures believed to be connected to the event.
The controversy erupted after viral videos surfaced online showing groups of men attacking women, tearing their clothes, and subjecting them to public humiliation. While some reports claim that rape may have occurred, authorities say investigations are ongoing and have yet to confirm those allegations.
Local sources allege that the festival enforces a troubling custom requiring women to remain indoors. Those who defy the rule reportedly become targets of mob attacks, a claim that has further fueled national outrage.
As investigations continue, the incident has reignited calls for stronger institutional presence, better surveillance, and urgent reforms to combat gender-based violence across Nigeria.
