The has threatened to embark on another nationwide strike over what it described as the Federal Government’s failure to fully implement the December 2025 agreement reached with the union.
The warning followed the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of ASUU held at , Yola, where union leaders expressed deep frustration over unresolved welfare and salary-related issues affecting university lecturers across the country.
Addressing journalists in Abuja after the meeting, ASUU President, , accused the administration of President of partially implementing agreements reached with the union.
According to the union, some of the unresolved issues include the payment of withheld three-and-half-month salaries, promotion arrears, salary shortfalls linked to the controversial IPPIS payment platform, unremitted third-party deductions, and outstanding arrears from the 25–35 percent wage award.
Piwuna warned that the continued neglect of lecturers’ welfare by both the Federal and State Governments could trigger another wave of industrial action in the nation’s universities.
“The increasing frustration occasioned by the seeming government’s disinterest in the welfare of Nigerian academics is brewing a pent-up anger which could erupt into a fresh industrial crisis if urgent steps are not taken,” he stated.
The union called on well-meaning Nigerians, parents, and stakeholders in the education sector to prevail on the government to fully implement the agreement and address all pending issues in order to avoid another disruption in the academic calendar.
ASUU also disclosed that its NEC would convene an emergency meeting in the coming weeks to review the situation and determine the next line of action if the government fails to respond.
The latest threat has sparked fresh concerns among students and parents who fear another prolonged university shutdown, especially as many public tertiary institutions are still struggling with unstable academic calendars caused by repeated strikes over the years.
