A South African court has sentenced opposition leader and Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) head, Julius Malema, to five years in prison after he was found guilty of unlawfully discharging a firearm during a political rally in 2018.
The ruling was delivered on Thursday by Magistrate Twanet Olivier following Malema’s conviction on charges including unlawful possession of a firearm and discharging a weapon in a public space.
The court proceedings attracted heavy political attention, with large numbers of EFF supporters gathering outside the courthouse in a show of solidarity.
