Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has sparked fresh international controversy after describing South Africa’s policies as “super racist” against white citizens, a claim that has been firmly rejected by President Cyril Ramaphosa.
In a post shared on X, Musk criticised the country’s race-based empowerment policies, arguing that they unfairly disadvantage white South Africans. He went further to claim that South Africa now has “more anti-white laws than apartheid had anti-black laws,” adding that the system amounts to what he described as “Apartheid 2.0.”
The comments quickly generated widespread reactions online, with critics accusing Musk of misrepresenting South Africa’s post-apartheid policies.
Responding to the remarks, President Ramaphosa dismissed Musk’s claims, saying the government’s policies are designed to correct historical inequalities rather than discriminate against any racial group.
He explained that programmes such as Black Economic Empowerment are aimed at addressing the legacy of apartheid, which systematically excluded Black South Africans, as well as other disadvantaged groups including women and persons with disabilities.
According to Ramaphosa, such policies are grounded in the country’s constitution and are intended to promote inclusive economic participation, not racial exclusion.
The exchange has reignited debate over South Africa’s transformation policies, with supporters insisting they are necessary for social and economic justice, while critics argue they can be exclusionary in practice.
