Former Kano State Governor and Senator, , has officially defected from the (PDP) to the (APC), in a move that could reshape political alignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Shekarau announced his defection on Sunday while addressing supporters at his residence in Mundubawa, , stating that the decision followed extensive consultations with his political allies.

According to him, internal challenges within the PDP played a major role in his exit, noting that the party is currently facing significant difficulties that make it less viable moving forward.

“We took this decision after wide deliberations and careful consideration of all available options,” Shekarau said, adding that joining the APC emerged as the most strategic choice.

He also ruled out aligning with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing it as a party driven by personal interests and still struggling to establish a strong political footing.

The former governor urged his loyalists to begin the process of formally resigning from the PDP at their respective ward levels and to commence registration with the APC before the official deadline.

Shekarau is expected to publicly formalise his membership by registering at his Giginyu Ward in Nassarawa Local Government Area in the coming days.

Political observers note that his defection follows recent efforts by APC leadership to strengthen its base ahead of the next election cycle. Earlier this month, APC National Chairman, , visited Kano and reportedly appealed to Shekarau to join the ruling party.

The development is seen as a significant boost for the APC in Kano State, while raising fresh concerns about internal stability within the PDP as political realignments continue across the country.
