Fresh concerns have emerged over the handling of major criminal investigations in Nigeria’s South-East region, with families of victims, legal experts, and human rights advocates alleging that some cases have remained unresolved due to weak investigations and premature conclusions by security agencies.
A recent investigative report has highlighted several controversial killings, disappearances, and arrests across the region, raising questions about the effectiveness of criminal investigations and accountability within the justice system.
At the centre of the debate is the 2023 assassination of Labour Party senatorial candidate Chief Oyibo Chukwu, who was killed alongside his aides just days before the general elections in Enugu State. More than three years later, members of his family say they are still seeking answers and justice.
According to the report, several families and rights groups have expressed concern that some violent incidents are quickly linked to separatist activities before comprehensive investigations are completed. Critics argue that such conclusions can potentially divert attention from other possible motives, including political violence, communal conflicts, cult-related activities, and organised criminal operations.
The report also referenced other unresolved cases involving political figures, traditional rulers, community leaders, and civilians whose families continue to seek justice years after the incidents occurred.
Human rights advocates and legal practitioners interviewed in the investigation called for more professional, transparent, and evidence-based policing. They argued that thorough forensic analysis, proper crime-scene management, and impartial investigations are essential to ensuring justice for victims and restoring public confidence in law enforcement.
Several experts further warned that failure to resolve high-profile cases could deepen public distrust and create the perception that criminal cases are not being adequately investigated.
The report also highlighted allegations of wrongful arrests, prolonged detentions, and misconduct by some security operatives. However, the Nigeria Police Force had not publicly responded to the specific allegations at the time of the report.
Security analysts maintain that the South-East faces multiple security challenges, including armed criminal gangs, kidnappings, political violence, communal disputes, and separatist-related unrest. They stress that each case should be investigated independently based on available evidence rather than assumptions.
As calls for police reform continue to grow, legal experts say strengthening investigative capacity, improving accountability mechanisms, and ensuring transparency in criminal investigations will be crucial to rebuilding trust between citizens and security agencies.
For many affected families, the central demand remains unchanged: justice, accountability, and answers regarding the fate of their loved ones.
