Former Chief of Army Staff, Retired Lt. Gen. , has stated that Nigeria’s security agencies possess the capability to track down bandits and terrorists with the same efficiency they use in locating ordinary citizens and social media users.
Buratai made the remarks during an interview on TVC, where he was asked about the military’s response to recent kidnappings, including the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State.
According to him, the issue is not necessarily a lack of capacity, but a need for improved coordination, recruitment, and training within the security architecture.
“I don’t believe security agencies cannot locate bandits if they can locate ordinary citizens and social media influencers,” he said.
He added that Nigeria’s security system requires continuous strengthening through increased manpower and professional development.
“We need more troops, more policemen, and more operatives to be recruited, trained, and retrained,” Buratai stated.
His comments come amid renewed public concern over rising insecurity, particularly in rural communities affected by repeated attacks and mass abductions.
The remarks have triggered debate, with critics arguing that the former army chief overlooked deeper structural challenges within the military and security institutions.
Buratai, who led the Nigerian Army between 2015 and 2021, has previously faced allegations relating to procurement processes and financial accountability during his tenure—claims he has consistently denied.
As insecurity continues to worsen in several parts of the country, his latest comments have reignited discussions about the effectiveness of Nigeria’s security strategy and the leadership decisions of past military administrations.
