BENIN CITY, NIGERIA — The Department of State Services (DSS) has uncovered an alleged plot by suspected terrorists and bandits to carry out a mass abduction of schoolchildren in Edo State, particularly within the Edo North Senatorial District.
According to an intelligence memo dated June 5, 2026, security agencies were alerted to an imminent threat against schools following intelligence gathered from intercepted communications between two suspected bandits identified as Bawa and Nuhu.
The DSS disclosed that the suspects allegedly discussed plans to target schoolchildren after previous attempts to kidnap wealthy individuals reportedly failed.
According to the intelligence report, the suspects believed that abducting schoolchildren would attract greater government attention and increase the likelihood of receiving large ransom payments and concessions.
As part of efforts to prevent the planned attack, security operatives reportedly arrested a 25-year-old suspect identified as Emmanuel Momidu. He was allegedly caught conducting surveillance around Makeke Secondary School in Makeke Community, Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of Edo State.
The DSS has advised authorities to immediately strengthen security around schools across the state, especially in vulnerable communities within Edo North.
The agency recommended the deployment of security personnel to schools and surrounding communities in collaboration with the Edo State Security Corps, local vigilante groups, hunters, and other community-based security outfits.
It also called for intensified patrols, surveillance operations, and intelligence gathering in areas considered vulnerable to attacks.
The latest security alert has renewed concerns about the safety of schoolchildren as kidnapping-for-ransom continues to pose a major threat in several parts of Nigeria.
The warning comes weeks after gunmen reportedly abducted pupils and teachers from a school in Oyo State, an incident that sparked nationwide outrage and renewed calls for stronger protection of educational institutions.
For years, armed groups have increasingly targeted schools, using students as bargaining tools for ransom demands and negotiations.
Authorities are yet to issue further public statements regarding additional security measures, but residents and school administrators have been urged to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious activities to security agencies.
