A major security operation in Enugu State has led to the arrest of six suspected gunmen and the recovery of a large cache of sophisticated weapons, including a rocket-propelled launcher, 17 AK-47 rifles, grenades, and more than 1,000 rounds of ammunition.

Governor Peter Mbah disclosed the development on Friday while inspecting the recovered weapons at the headquarters of the Department of State Services (DSS) in Enugu.

According to the governor, the suspects were among individuals previously identified on security watchlists and are believed to be connected to a series of violent attacks and criminal activities across the state.

The operation was carried out through a coordinated effort involving the DSS, the Nigerian Police Force, the military, and other security agencies.

Items recovered from the suspects include 17 AK-47 rifles, one General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG), a rocket-propelled launcher, two hand grenades, multiple magazines, tear-gas canisters, military-style uniforms, and 1,071 rounds of live ammunition.

Governor Mbah described the arrests as a significant breakthrough in the state’s ongoing fight against violent crime, kidnapping, and armed attacks.

He revealed that some of the suspects were linked to attacks that claimed the lives of security personnel in late 2025, adding that several of those responsible had previously been declared wanted by authorities.

“We have consistently maintained that there is no hiding place for criminals in Enugu State. Anyone involved in criminal activities will be tracked, apprehended, and brought to justice,” the governor stated.

Mbah attributed the success of the operation to improved intelligence gathering, surveillance technology, and enhanced collaboration among security agencies.

The governor also warned landlords and property owners to properly verify the identities of prospective tenants, stressing that the government would continue enforcing laws against individuals whose properties are used for criminal activities.

He further welcomed recent legislative efforts aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture, including the proposed State Police framework, which he said would enhance local security management and improve public safety.

The latest arrests come as security agencies intensify operations across the South-East region to dismantle criminal networks and restore peace in affected communities.
