Millions of users across the globe were left frustrated on Friday after social media giant Meta experienced a major service disruption that affected its flagship platforms, Facebook and Instagram.
The widespread outage prevented many users from accessing their accounts, while others were unexpectedly logged out without warning. Attempts to sign back in were met with repeated error messages, fueling concerns about a large-scale technical failure within Meta’s digital infrastructure.
The disruption impacted Facebook’s website, mobile application, and Messenger service simultaneously, leaving users unable to refresh feeds, load pages, or communicate through the platform. Instagram users also reported significant access issues, particularly on the web version of the app, although the severity varied across regions.
As confusion spread, thousands of users turned to X (formerly Twitter) to confirm whether the outage was a global issue. Data from internet monitoring platform Downdetector recorded a sharp spike in complaints shortly after the disruption began, indicating that the problem was affecting users in multiple countries.
Despite the outage, WhatsApp—another Meta-owned platform—remained largely operational, offering some relief to users who rely on Meta’s ecosystem for communication.
As of the time of this report, Meta has not issued an official statement explaining the cause of the outage or provided a timeline for full restoration of services. Users in several countries continue to experience intermittent access problems as engineers work to resolve the issue.
