ABUJA, NIGERIA — The United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) has announced that more than 200 ISIS fighters were killed during a coordinated counterterrorism operation carried out in Northeast Nigeria in collaboration with Nigerian security forces.
AFRICOM disclosed the development in a statement released on its official social media platform on Wednesday, describing the mission as a major blow to terrorist operations in the region.
According to the U.S. military command, the operation successfully eliminated several high-profile ISIS commanders, including Abu-Bilal al-Manuki, a senior figure accused of financing and coordinating terrorist activities.
“AFRICOM, in continued coordination with Nigeria, conducted operations against ISIS fighters in Northeast Nigeria. No U.S. or Nigerian forces were harmed,” the statement read.
The command further stated that the operation resulted in the elimination of more than 200 terrorists.
AFRICOM identified Abu-Bilal al-Manuki as a key ISIS operative, describing him as a major financier and organizational strategist allegedly responsible for planning attacks against U.S. interests.
According to the military command, the death of al-Manuki is expected to significantly weaken ISIS operations and disrupt the group’s international network.
While details regarding the exact timing and locations of the operation were not disclosed, the announcement represents one of the most significant counterterrorism successes publicly reported by AFRICOM in cooperation with Nigeria in recent years.
As of the time of filing this report, the Nigerian military had not issued an official statement regarding the operation.
The development comes amid ongoing efforts by Nigerian security forces and international partners to combat insurgency and terrorism in the Northeast, where extremist groups linked to ISIS and Boko Haram continue to pose security challenges.
Security analysts believe the operation could deal a substantial setback to terrorist activities in the region if the reported casualties and leadership losses are confirmed.
