A fresh political controversy has emerged within the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) following claims by the party’s National Leader, , that prominent activist turned down an offer to contest for a seat in the House of Representatives.
Speaking to journalists amid the ongoing dispute over the party’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT) senatorial primary election, Dickson disclosed that both he and the party’s presidential candidate, , had personally offered Yesufu a House of Representatives ticket.
According to Dickson, the activist declined the opportunity because her political ambition was focused on securing a Senate seat.
“Peter Obi and I offered Aisha a House of Representatives ticket, but she turned it down. A position many people are struggling to get, she rejected because she was aiming higher,” Dickson stated.
The remarks come amid a deepening disagreement between Yesufu and the NDC leadership following her unsuccessful bid for the party’s FCT senatorial ticket.
Yesufu has publicly criticised the conduct of the party’s primary election, alleging irregularities, repeated changes to the process, and a lack of transparency in the selection procedure. She maintained that she remained in the race until the end and never withdrew her candidacy.
The activist also accused party officials of failing to honour commitments made regarding the conduct of the primaries and argued that the process did not provide a fair and transparent platform for all aspirants.
In response, Dickson insisted that the party leadership made efforts to accommodate her politically and expressed disappointment over the ongoing public dispute.
The disagreement has sparked widespread debate among supporters and political observers, with many closely watching how the internal tensions could affect the party’s preparations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Despite the controversy, Yesufu has reiterated her commitment to democratic participation and political reform while maintaining her criticism of the primary process.
