Leaders of the Kwankwasiyya Movement have held a crucial closed-door meeting with the National Leader of the National Democratic Coalition (NDC), Senator Seriake Dickson, in a fresh effort to resolve growing tensions threatening the party’s unity in Kano State.
The high-level meeting, which lasted several hours, focused on addressing disagreements between Kwankwasiyya members and longstanding NDC stakeholders over leadership positions, candidate selection, and power-sharing arrangements within the party.
According to a statement issued by the NDC National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director Esq., the party leadership has stepped in as a mediator to ensure fairness, inclusion, and wider participation among members ahead of key political activities leading to the 2027 general elections.
The party described the discussions as productive and reaffirmed its commitment to internal democracy, insisting that no candidate would be imposed in Kano State or any other part of the country.
“The NDC leadership remains committed to fairness, inclusion, and democratic principles. Every member will be given an equal opportunity to participate in the party’s affairs,” the statement noted.
At the center of the crisis is a controversial 60/40 power-sharing arrangement reportedly agreed upon when the Kwankwasiyya Movement joined the NDC.
Under the arrangement, Kwankwasiyya was expected to control 60 percent of party structures and political positions, while the original NDC members would retain 40 percent.
However, tensions escalated after some founding party members accused Kwankwasiyya leaders of dominating party structures and securing an overwhelming share of elective tickets during recent primary elections.
The dispute reportedly led to the reassignment of several House of Representatives and State Assembly tickets in Kano State, triggering accusations, counter-accusations, and threats of defection from aggrieved stakeholders.
Despite reports suggesting that former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso threatened to leave the party over the controversy, his camp has denied the claims.
The NDC leadership also dismissed reports circulating online about the release of official primary election results, describing them as false and urging members to disregard any unofficial documents.
Political analysts say the outcome of the ongoing negotiations could significantly influence the party’s strength and stability in Kano, one of Nigeria’s most politically strategic states.
The latest meeting comes amid growing concern that unresolved disagreements could weaken the party’s chances ahead of the 2027 elections if a lasting solution is not reached.
Observers believe the intervention by Senator Seriake Dickson and the national leadership may be critical in restoring confidence, preventing defections, and preserving party unity in Kano State.
