The Edo State Government has confirmed that six people have died following a fresh outbreak of Lassa fever, as health authorities intensify emergency response measures to curb the spread of the disease.
Speaking during a press briefing in Benin City on Friday evening, the State Commissioner for Health, Cyril Oshiomhole, disclosed that the state has so far recorded 28 laboratory-confirmed cases.
According to him, a recent surge in infections — particularly in Etsako West and Esan West Local Government Areas — indicates sustained community transmission, prompting the government to officially declare a Lassa fever outbreak.
“Following a careful epidemiological review and risk assessment by the Edo State Ministry of Health, I hereby formally declare a Lassa Fever outbreak in Edo State,” Oshiomhole stated.
“As of today, we have recorded 28 confirmed cases with six deaths. The spike in cases signals sustained transmission that requires immediate, coordinated, and escalated response.”
The commissioner explained that the state had anticipated the seasonal pattern of the disease and had taken proactive steps to strengthen preparedness.
He revealed that medical supplies, including specialized Lassa treatment packs, were earlier donated to the Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital to support case management and containment efforts.
Health authorities have urged residents to maintain proper hygiene, avoid contact with rodents, and promptly report suspected symptoms as surveillance and response operations continue across affected communities.
