Panic and confusion gripped residents of a housing compound in Asaba, Delta State, after heavily armed operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) carried out a dramatic overnight raid, breaking doors and scaling balconies in a late-night operation.
One of the occupants, a Nigerian content creator, narrated his ordeal in a viral video, describing the incident as a terrifying “Gestapo-style” invasion that occurred between 2:00 a.m. and 3:00 a.m.
According to him, the quiet of the night was suddenly shattered by loud bangs at the compound gate, followed by the arrival of dozens of armed men.
“At first, I thought they were cultists or robbers,” he said. “But when I looked closely, I saw the EFCC badge on their backs. There were over 70 to 80 operatives inside the compound.”
Doors Smashed, Balconies Scaled
The resident said the operatives appeared fully prepared for a large-scale operation. He claimed they used ladders to reach upper-floor apartments while others wielded sledgehammers to force entry into locked homes.
“The next thing I heard was a heavy bang as they broke my door,” he recounted. “I begged them to wait so I could open it. When they entered, they demanded my phone. I explained I wasn’t involved in fraud and showed them my content equipment.”
He added that the presence of his young child may have prevented further confrontation.
Neighbours Taken Away In Confusion
While he was left behind after questioning, the content creator said several neighbours were not as fortunate. He described chaotic scenes as residents were allegedly taken away from their homes while still disoriented from sleep.
“One of my neighbours had his generator running. They switched it off, entered his room, and carried him away before he even understood what was happening,” he said.
Rising Concerns Over Night Raids
The incident has renewed debate over the EFCC’s frequent late-night enforcement operations. Human rights advocates have repeatedly criticised such raids, arguing they often traumatise families and may violate citizens’ rights to privacy when conducted without clear identification or proper procedures.
As of the time of this report, the EFCC has not issued an official statement regarding the Asaba operation.
