Nigeria’s electoral umpire, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), says it has begun consultations with key stakeholders following mounting public concerns over the scheduled dates for the 2027 general elections.
In a statement issued on Saturday and signed by National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, the Commission explained that the timetable was drawn strictly in line with existing constitutional and electoral laws.
According to INEC, the dates were fixed based on provisions contained in Nigeria’s electoral regulations, which mandate that presidential and National Assembly elections must hold on the third Saturday of February in an election year, while governorship and state assembly polls follow two weeks later.
Based on these guidelines, the Commission scheduled the Presidential and National Assembly elections for Saturday, February 20, 2027, and the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections for Saturday, March 6, 2027.
However, INEC acknowledged widespread concerns from political actors, civil society groups, and citizens over the coincidence of the dates with major national observances, which some fear could affect voter turnout.
“The Commission has taken due notice of concerns expressed by stakeholders regarding the timing of the elections,” the statement noted, adding that it remains sensitive to issues that could influence participation and the smooth conduct of the polls.
INEC revealed it is currently engaging in consultations and may seek legislative intervention if adjustments become necessary, provided any changes remain consistent with constitutional and statutory requirements.
Reaffirming its stance, the Commission stressed its commitment to transparency, inclusivity, and credible elections, assuring Nigerians that any further developments would be publicly communicated.
