The United States government has confirmed the enforcement of new visa restrictions targeting individuals involved in religious persecution, declaring that offenders will be barred from entering the country.
The announcement was made by Mark Walker, the U.S. Principal Advisor for Global Religious Freedom, who disclosed the development in a post on X.
According to him, the policy—initially announced by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio—is already being implemented and will continue to be enforced against violators.
“If you engage in persecution, you are not welcome in America,” Walker stated, adding that the measure is aimed at enhancing national security and holding perpetrators accountable.
The policy is anchored on Section 212(a)(3)(C) of the U.S. Immigration and Nationality Act, which allows authorities to deny visas to individuals who have directed, supported, or carried out violations of religious freedom. In some cases, the restrictions may also extend to their immediate family members.
A statement from the United States Department of State indicated that the move is part of broader efforts to respond to rising cases of religious violence in parts of the world, including Nigeria.
The statement referenced ongoing attacks against Christians and other religious groups by extremist elements, stressing that the U.S. will not remain passive in the face of such abuses.
The development comes amid growing international concern over insecurity in Nigeria, where violent incidents linked to terrorism, kidnapping, and communal clashes have continued to draw global attention.
In a related move, the U.S. Mission in Nigeria recently suspended visa appointment services at its embassy in Abuja following the authorised departure of non-essential staff due to worsening security conditions.
An updated travel advisory also maintained Nigeria at Level 3, urging American citizens to reconsider travel due to risks associated with crime, terrorism, and civil unrest.
Observers say the visa restriction policy signals a tougher stance by the U.S. on human rights violations, particularly religious persecution, and may have far-reaching diplomatic and security implications.
