US President Donald Trump has announced what he described as the “most crushing economic operation ever taken against any country” against Iran, warning governments, businesses and financial institutions that continue to support Tehran could face severe economic consequences.
Trump made the announcement on Thursday in a statement posted on his social media platform, describing the new campaign as “economic warfare” and an unprecedented effort to isolate Iran from the global financial and commercial system.
According to Trump, the measures are aimed at cutting Iran off from international financial and commercial networks and preventing the country from receiving economic support from foreign governments and businesses.
“No one has given the Islamic Republic of Iran a greater opportunity to make a Deal than me. TRAGICALLY, for them, they have failed to take it,” Trump said.
He added: “Therefore, today, I am announcing the MOST CRUSHING ECONOMIC OPERATION EVER TAKEN AGAINST ANY COUNTRY! This will be Economic Warfare and Isolation on an unprecedented scale.”
Trump also claimed that Iran’s military infrastructure had suffered extensive damage, alleging that its navy had been destroyed, its air force crippled and its military factories reduced to rubble.
He further claimed that Iran’s currency was “worthless” and described the country as being “hanging by a thread.”
The US president warned that the measures would extend beyond Iran, saying foreign governments and companies that continue providing financial or commercial support to Tehran could also face penalties from Washington.
“ANY country that allows its financial institutions, businesses, airports, or government entities to provide any type of lifeline to Iran will itself face TREMENDOUS Economic Consequences,” Trump warned.
Trump specifically called for an end to oil smuggling, financial swap lines, cash transfers, exchange houses, ship registries and the use of front companies to facilitate business with Iran.
“Oil smuggling, swap lines, cash transfers, exchange houses, ship registries, front companies It all needs to stop NOW. You know who you are,” he said.
Trump urged US allies to join Washington in isolating Iran, describing the campaign as an “ECONOMIC D-DAY.”
He also reiterated his position that Iran must not acquire a nuclear weapon, saying the measures would weaken Tehran’s ability to project power and support activities beyond its borders.
The announcement represents another major escalation in Trump’s pressure campaign against Iran, with the US president presenting the latest measures as a broader campaign of economic isolation targeting Iran’s access to international trade and finance.
The move could place additional pressure on countries and international businesses that maintain economic ties with Tehran, particularly those involved in energy, shipping, banking and financial transactions.
