Indian authorities have arrested a Nigerian woman in Indore after allegedly recovering cocaine valued at more than ₹29 lakh (about ₦41 million) from her possession.
The suspect, identified as Imyunel Joy, was reportedly arrested on Saturday in the Sinhasa IT Park area of Indore during a police surveillance operation.
According to Indian police, officers deployed to monitor crowded areas during the Raksha Bandhan celebrations became suspicious after noticing Joy carrying a black bag. Police said they stopped her and questioned her about her presence in the area but were not satisfied with her responses.
A subsequent search of the bag allegedly uncovered a transparent plastic pouch containing 57.18 grammes of cocaine. Officers also reportedly seized a mobile phone from the suspect.
Police subsequently registered a case against Joy under Sections 8 and 21 of India’s Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act at Chandan Nagar Police Station.
During questioning, investigators allege that Joy said she had purchased the cocaine at a lower price and intended to resell it in Indore at a higher price.
Authorities said investigations are continuing to determine where the cocaine was obtained and whether other individuals were involved in the alleged drug operation.
Police are also examining Joy’s mobile phone and other digital evidence for possible links to suspected suppliers and intended buyers.
According to reports, Joy is a Lagos resident who had been staying in Mumbai’s Bandra East before travelling to Indore. She reportedly entered India on a seven-month business visa.
Because she is a foreign national, Indian authorities are also examining her passport, visa, immigration records and movements within the country.
Investigators are particularly looking into a possible Mumbai-Indore connection, including how the alleged cocaine shipment was sourced and transported.
Joy has reportedly been remanded while police continue questioning her and investigating the suspected supply network.
The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have not disclosed whether additional arrests are expected.
