Two members of the Rivers State House of Assembly have appealed to their colleagues to halt the ongoing impeachment process against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Nma Odu, calling for restraint and a political resolution to the deepening crisis in the state.
The Minority Leader of the House, Hon. Sylvanus Nwankwo, alongside Hon. Peter Abbey, who represents Degema Constituency, made the appeal during a press briefing in Port Harcourt on Monday.
Addressing journalists, the lawmakers said their intervention followed intense pressure and appeals from elders, community leaders and constituents across Rivers State.
“Rivers State House of Assembly has issued a notice of impeachment on Governor Fubara and his Deputy. We are appealing to our fellow colleagues to temper justice with mercy and explore ways of resolving this matter without resorting to impeachment,” Nwankwo said.
He acknowledged allegations of constitutional breaches but insisted that dialogue and compromise should be prioritised over removal from office.
“Having listened to several calls from our elders and leaders, both within and outside the state, we are begging our colleagues to reconsider their steps and seek an amicable resolution, even though the Governor and his Deputy are alleged to have infringed on the Constitution,” he added.
The appeal comes days after the governor and his deputy were reportedly served impeachment notices over allegations of gross misconduct.
Last Thursday, the Majority Leader, Hon. Major Jack, presented a notice reportedly signed by 26 lawmakers, detailing several allegations against Governor Fubara. These include extra-budgetary spending of over ₦800 billion without legislative approval, withholding of funds meant for the Assembly Service Commission, the demolition of the Assembly complex, and alleged defiance of Supreme Court rulings on legislative autonomy.
A separate notice was also read against the deputy governor, accusing her of complicity in unconstitutional financial expenditures.
The Speaker of the House, Martin Amaewhule, announced that the impeachment notices would be formally served on both officials within seven days, in line with constitutional provisions. However, Governor Fubara has since stated that he is yet to receive any official impeachment notice.
The latest development signals a renewed escalation of the long-running political crisis in Rivers State, rooted in the rift between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, now the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.
Previous impeachment attempts in 2023 and 2025 were stalled following presidential interventions, before a state of emergency was declared in the state by President Bola Tinubu in March 2025.
As tensions continue to rise, the call by the two lawmakers adds to growing voices urging calm, dialogue and political compromise to prevent further instability in Rivers State.
