Former pastor of the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries (MFM), Femi Jimoh, has reportedly died after years of health struggles following a controversial period of detention that lasted several years.
His reported death was announced by UK-based Nigerian blogger Maureen Badejo, who said Jimoh had battled serious health complications after his prolonged detention and an alleged gunshot injury to his leg.
Jimoh became widely known following a 2024 interview with Yoruba Gidi TV, where he gave an emotional account of his experience in custody and alleged that he had spent approximately nine years in detention in connection with an alleged plot to rob MFM.
He alleged that his ordeal began after he encountered Michael Gbadamosi, who was then described as the Chief Security Officer to MFM founder Pastor Daniel Olukoya, at a native doctor’s residence.
Jimoh claimed he was subsequently arrested and detained, alleging that he was physically abused and later shot in the leg by a police officer.
He also alleged that he was held for extended periods without adequate access to legal representation and was eventually charged with offences including attempted murder, conspiracy, armed robbery and felony.
Jimoh further claimed that his family approached Olukoya seeking his release and that they were allegedly advised to ask him to plead guilty.
He said his father later died after visiting him in prison and seeing his condition.
MFM, however, strongly rejected Jimoh’s allegations and denied responsibility for his prolonged detention.
The church’s Chief Legal Adviser, Davidson Adejuwon, said in 2024 that claims that the former ministers were imprisoned for nine years over offences they did not commit were “false, mischievous and misleading.”
Adejuwon maintained that the men had been prosecuted by the police over an alleged plan to attack and rob the church, insisting that MFM had acted appropriately by reporting what it considered credible intelligence to law enforcement authorities.
Gbadamosi also denied Jimoh’s allegation that they had met at a native doctor’s residence.
The case later took a significant turn when the Lagos State High Court sitting in Igbosere acquitted and discharged Jimoh and two other defendants, Henry Aiyewero and Caleb Oloruntele.
In a July 2016 judgment, Justice O.A. Williams ruled that the prosecution had failed to establish its case beyond reasonable doubt in relation to the alleged conspiracy to rob MFM.
Evidence presented during the trial included a video that prosecutors said showed the defendants planning the alleged robbery. However, the manager of Jethro Hotel, where the recording was made, testified that the gathering had been presented to him as a movie shoot.
The court ultimately found that the prosecution had not proved the alleged criminal agreement and acquitted the defendants.
Jimoh’s story resurfaced in 2024 after his interview with Yoruba Gidi TV generated widespread attention and renewed debate over his detention, the allegations against him and the role of MFM officials in the case.
Following the broadcast, the Force Criminal Investigation Department invited Olakunle Fashugba, the CEO of Yoruba Gidi Online TV, for questioning over allegations including conspiracy, cyberbullying, serious threats to life, forgery and conduct likely to cause a breach of the peace.
The controversy also reportedly led to further legal proceedings involving Gbadamosi, Jimoh and Yoruba Gidi TV.
According to Badejo, some of the legal issues surrounding the matter remained unresolved at the time of Jimoh’s reported death.
His death has therefore renewed questions about his years in detention, the allegations he made, the court’s eventual acquittal and the broader issues of accountability and access to justice.
The circumstances surrounding his reported death and the current status of any pending legal proceedings remain matters of public interest.
