Residents of Kwandawa community in Malumfashi Local Government Area of Katsina State are reportedly living in fear after suspected bandits allegedly imposed a ₦20 million levy on the village and threatened to force residents out if the demand is not met.
The development was revealed on Sunday amid growing concerns over worsening insecurity across parts of the state.
According to reports, the armed group stormed Kwandawa on Saturday night and issued the ultimatum following the reported killing of one of their members in the area.
Beyond the financial demand, the attackers were also accused of looting homes and stealing valuables belonging to newly married women.
Reports indicate that the bandits moved from house to house, carting away bridal gifts and household items before extending their activities to neighbouring communities, including Tsaraka and Maturi, where similar incidents were allegedly recorded.
The latest development has raised fresh concerns about the increasing influence of armed groups in rural communities, where residents continue to face threats, extortion, kidnappings and violent attacks.
Attempts to obtain official confirmation from security authorities were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
The incident highlights the growing challenge of illegal taxation and intimidation by criminal groups operating in parts of northern Nigeria, where vulnerable communities are often forced to choose between paying levies or facing violent reprisals.
Katsina State remains one of the regions most affected by banditry despite repeated military operations aimed at dismantling criminal networks and restoring security.
Residents are calling on security agencies and government authorities to take urgent action to protect affected communities and prevent further attacks.
