Fresh attacks by suspected armed bandits have heightened fears among residents of Oyo State’s Oke-Ogun region after at least two people were killed and several others injured in separate incidents along major road corridors within 24 hours.
The first attack occurred at about 9:30 p.m. on Friday along the Kishi-Igbeti road when gunmen reportedly ambushed a moving vehicle and opened fire on its occupants.
Among those killed was an electricity worker, Moshood Kayode, popularly known as “Mr. Kay,” alongside another victim whose identity had not been officially confirmed at the time of filing this report. Several other passengers sustained varying degrees of injuries during the attack.
Less than 24 hours later, another violent incident was reported along the Igboho-Igbeti road near the Old Oyo National Park.
According to eyewitnesses, heavily armed men dressed in military-style camouflage emerged from a nearby forest and began shooting at passing vehicles around 3:25 p.m. on Saturday, causing panic among motorists and commuters.
A red Volkswagen Golf and a commercial passenger bus were among the vehicles targeted. The commercial bus reportedly had one of its tyres punctured by bullets, while four occupants of the Golf vehicle sustained serious gunshot wounds.
The injured victims included the driver, Alhaji Rafiu Jimoh, and one Jubril Jelili, who were travelling from Igbeti to Saki when the attack occurred.
Despite their injuries, the victims reportedly managed to return to Igboho, where they received emergency medical treatment.
“We initially thought they were security personnel because they were dressed in camouflage uniforms, but they suddenly started shooting at vehicles,” an eyewitness said.
Following the attacks, security operatives including the Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Amotekun Corps, and local forest guards were deployed to the affected areas to restore calm and secure the roads.
The incidents have renewed concerns about security around the Old Oyo National Park, an area residents have repeatedly identified as a suspected hideout for kidnappers and armed criminal groups.
Community leaders and residents are now urging the Federal Government and security agencies to intensify operations within the forests surrounding the park to dismantle criminal camps and safeguard travellers.
Investigations into the attacks are ongoing, while security patrols have reportedly been strengthened across the affected routes.
