Fear and panic have gripped residents of Iluke community in Kabba-Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State following the abduction of a medical doctor and his wife by suspected kidnappers.
The victims, identified as Dr. Ebi, popularly known as Omo Kemuna, and his wife, were reportedly kidnapped during a deadly midnight raid by heavily armed gunmen in the Okebukun area of the Bunu district.
According to reports, the incident occurred around 1am on Thursday when the attackers stormed the community on motorcycles, firing several gunshots into the air to scare residents before forcefully whisking the couple away to an unknown destination.
The sound of gunfire reportedly caused panic across the area as many residents fled into nearby bushes for safety.
Speaking on the incident, a community youth leader identified as Samuel disclosed that the kidnappers escaped with the victims shortly after the attack.
“Dr. Ebi owns a clinic in Oferre within the Iluke community. Immediately they captured him and his wife, they shot sporadically and fled,” he said.
Residents say the latest abduction has further heightened insecurity across Iluke and neighbouring communities in Mopamuro and Ijumu local government areas, where kidnapping incidents have become increasingly frequent in recent months.
Community members also recalled previous attacks along the Iluke-Oferre road, including the abduction of several commuters earlier this month after armed men reportedly mounted roadblocks in the area.
Locals accused criminal gangs of continuously terrorising communities despite repeated complaints to security agencies.
As of the time of filing this report, the Kogi State Police Command had yet to officially confirm the incident.
