The United Nations has raised fresh concerns over worsening food insecurity in Nigeria, warning that about 35 million Nigerians could face acute hunger between June and August 2026 if urgent interventions are not made.
According to the UN, Nigeria is currently facing one of the largest hunger crises in the world, driven by rising inflation, insecurity, displacement of farmers, economic hardship, and the soaring cost of food items across the country.
The report revealed that millions of vulnerable families, especially women and children, are at risk of severe malnutrition and starvation as many households struggle daily to afford basic meals.
The global body also warned that communities affected by insecurity, flooding, and economic instability remain the hardest hit, particularly in northern parts of the country where farming activities have been heavily disrupted.
Humanitarian agencies are now calling for urgent international support and increased funding to prevent the situation from escalating into a full-scale humanitarian disaster.
The UN stressed that without immediate action, millions of Nigerians could experience worsening hunger conditions in the coming months.
The warning comes amid growing public frustration over the high cost of living, food inflation, and worsening economic challenges affecting citizens nationwide.
