The World Igbo Congress (WIC) has warned political actors and their supporters against threats or intimidation directed at former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, and other Igbo people participating in Nigeria’s political process.
The organisation said it would no longer remain silent when political disagreements escalate into actions capable of endangering the lives or property of Igbo people.
Vice Chairman of the World Igbo Congress, Mazi Basil Onwukwe, made the remarks during an interview on 90MinutesAfrica with Rudolf Okonkwo.
Onwukwe stressed that although the organisation remains non-partisan, its neutrality should not be interpreted as indifference to threats against Igbo people because of their political beliefs or affiliations.
He said the WIC had been closely monitoring political developments in Nigeria and would take a stronger position against intimidation or threats targeting members of the Igbo community.
According to him, the organisation was particularly concerned about reports of political figures being threatened over their activities and affiliations.
“Because we kept quiet when a particular state governor was threatening Peter Obi not to come to his state does not mean we don’t see what is going on,” Onwukwe said.
He maintained that political competition should be conducted peacefully and within the boundaries of democratic principles.
The WIC Vice Chairman urged politicians and their supporters to avoid bitterness, violence and intimidation, insisting that every Nigerian has the constitutional right to participate freely in political activities.
“There should not be any threat to any Igbo person in Nigeria anymore. World Igbo Congress wouldn’t tolerate such actions anymore,” he said.
Onwukwe further stated that the organisation was prepared to defend the lives and property of Igbo people wherever they reside, while calling for respect for the rights and safety of all Nigerians regardless of ethnicity or political affiliation.
He also highlighted the global presence of the Igbo community and the role of the World Igbo Congress and its affiliated organisations in supporting Igbo people living and conducting businesses across different countries.
Beyond political matters, Onwukwe disclosed that the organisation is advancing plans for an Igbo Credit Union in the United States, as well as a proposed Biafra Cenotaph and Monumental Park.
His comments come amid growing political activities and realignments ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, with Peter Obi remaining a prominent figure in the country’s political landscape.
The World Igbo Congress reiterated that political differences must not be allowed to degenerate into threats, violence or intimidation, stressing that democratic participation should be exercised peacefully and without fear.
