The United States has moved into heightened security alert following intelligence warnings that Iran and its network of proxy forces could attempt retaliatory attacks inside American territory.
According to a threat assessment reportedly reviewed by Reuters and produced by the Office of Intelligence and Analysis under the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Iran and affiliated groups “probably” pose a persistent threat of targeted operations against the U.S. homeland.
The February 28 assessment indicates that while a large-scale physical assault is considered unlikely, authorities are increasingly concerned about smaller, targeted attacks and retaliatory measures.
Cyber Threats and Targeted Operations Feared
Security analysts believe Iran-aligned “hacktivists” could initiate low-level cyber operations in the short term. These may include website defacements and distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks targeting American networks and critical infrastructure.
The report warned that retaliatory actions would “almost certainly escalate” if reports confirming the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, are fully verified.
Iran officially confirmed Khamenei’s death on Sunday, following earlier announcements by Israel and U.S. President Donald Trump. The reported strike has further intensified tensions between Washington and Tehran.
Homeland Security Responds
U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem stated that federal agencies are closely coordinating to counter any potential threat.
“I am in direct coordination with our federal intelligence and law enforcement partners as we continue to closely monitor and thwart any potential threats to the homeland,” she said in a statement.
Wider Middle-East Fallout
Beyond domestic concerns, U.S. intelligence believes Iran is likely to sustain attacks against American and allied interests across the Middle East. The widening air campaign involving the United States and Israel has reportedly expanded, with Israel striking targets in Lebanon following attacks by Hezbollah, while Tehran continues missile and drone strikes targeting Gulf states hosting U.S. military bases.
Officials warn that Iran may attempt to project retaliation beyond the Middle East if tensions continue to escalate.
The Trump administration has, however, maintained its position of sustained military pressure on Iran, carrying out operations alongside Israel amid the deepening regional crisis.
As the conflict intensifies, U.S. authorities say they remain vigilant to prevent any spillover of violence onto American soil.
