Klerksdorp, South Africa – March 3, 2026

In a dramatic early morning operation, South African police have foiled a planned ATM bombing in the heart of Klerksdorp, arresting seven suspects aged between 30 and 58.

The arrests, carried out on Tuesday, followed intelligence received by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (the Hawks), alerting authorities to an imminent attack in the city’s Central Business District (CBD).

According to an official statement by the South African Police Service (SAPS), the operation involved the Special Task Force (STF), the Hawks’ Tactical Operations Management Section (TOMS), and other security units who acted swiftly to prevent the crime.

During the raid, officers recovered one rifle, one pistol, and explosives believed to have been intended for use in the bombing. Authorities confirmed the suspects will face multiple charges, including possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, conspiracy to commit a crime, and possession of a suspected stolen vehicle.

The suspects are expected to appear before the Klerksdorp Magistrates’ Court shortly, where formal charges will be presented.

The SAPS emphasized that the arrests were the result of precise intelligence work and swift coordination, preventing what could have been a dangerous and destructive attack on the city.
