ABAKALIKI, EBONYI STATE — Human rights activist and former African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has called for a judicial coroner’s inquest into the death of 26-year-old physiotherapist, Mary Habila, whose death at the residence of Nigeria’s Minister of Works, David Umahi, has continued to attract widespread public attention.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Sowore said the circumstances surrounding Habila’s death warrant a thorough, independent and transparent investigation before her burial.
According to him, unanswered questions regarding the events leading to her death and the circumstances of her presence at the minister’s residence make it necessary for authorities to complete all relevant investigative and forensic procedures, including an autopsy where required by law.
Sowore also urged that the ongoing investigation should not be compromised by any premature burial, stressing that all legal and forensic processes should be concluded in the interest of justice.
He further stated that reports alleging Habila was found with blood coming from her mouth underscore the need for a comprehensive forensic examination to determine the exact cause of death.
Mary Habila’s death has remained under police investigation since she was found dead at Minister David Umahi’s residence in Uburu, Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State. The incident has generated nationwide concern and renewed calls for transparency in the investigation.
Minister David Umahi has confirmed that Habila died at his residence and identified her as a physiotherapist who had been seconded from the David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences to the Federal Ministry of Works. The minister has also stated that he requested a comprehensive autopsy and supports allowing investigators to complete their work without interference.
The Nigeria Police have maintained that an autopsy forms a critical part of the ongoing investigation to establish the exact cause and circumstances of Habila’s death.
Mary Habila’s funeral is scheduled for Friday, July 17, 2026, in Kaduna State. However, with investigations still underway, public attention remains focused on the outcome of the police inquiry and forensic examinations expected to provide answers surrounding the tragic incident.
