Senator Ali Ndume, representing Borno South Senatorial District, has renewed his call for sustained U.S.-backed military operations against Boko Haram, urging that American troops be deployed directly to his constituency to help eliminate insurgents.
Speaking on Politics Today on Channels Television, Ndume said he supports fresh U.S. airstrikes targeting Boko Haram fighters entrenched around the Mandara Mountains. He described the prolonged occupation of communities by insurgents as a source of displacement, fear, and ongoing hardship for residents who have been unable to return to their ancestral homes and farmlands.
“I called for it. In fact, I was thinking that they will start from my local government. Yes, because Boko Haram has dominated the Mandara Mountains for the past 15 years,” Ndume said.
The senator stressed that consistent and sustained offensives are the only way to permanently dislodge insurgents, restore security, and allow civilians to return safely. He urged that the 200 U.S. troops recently announced for deployment in Nigeria should be allowed to operate from his local government area, adding that residents would welcome their presence.
“For the past 16 years, I haven’t been able to go to my village safely. If the Americans come and operate from here, I am ready to move out of my house for them to stay,” Ndume added.
His remarks come amid ongoing debates over foreign military cooperation in Nigeria’s counterinsurgency campaign. The United States had earlier carried out a targeted airstrike in Sokoto, and recent U.S. military transport aircraft movements into Kaduna International Airport have sparked speculation about expanded collaboration between Washington and Abuja.
According to security sources, the 200 U.S. troops will provide training and technical support to the Nigerian Armed Forces, emphasizing that they will not engage in direct combat operations.
Ndume’s plea highlights the desperation of communities in Borno that continue to live under the shadow of insurgency, displacement, and insecurity.
