Human rights lawyer and activist, Deji Adeyanju, has called on former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai to voluntarily submit himself for investigation following his recent airport confrontation with security agents.
Speaking on ARISE News on Friday, Adeyanju challenged El-Rufai’s claims that security operatives attempted to unlawfully detain him at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, suggesting the incident may have been staged for media attention.
“I am not convinced there was any plan to arrest him. From the clip, it looks like he knew exactly what he was doing,” Adeyanju said, describing the former governor as a “drama artist” who thrives on political theatrics.
Adeyanju clarified that the seizure of El-Rufai’s passport by the Department of State Services (DSS) was likely a standard procedure under Section 2 of the DSS instrument regulation, which is aligned with the National Security Adviser Act. “If there was any attempt at unlawful arrest, it would have been unconstitutional, and of course, I would condemn it. But taking his passport may have been standard practice,” he added.
The lawyer stressed the importance of legal compliance, noting that El-Rufai is aware that agencies like the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) are investigating him. “Some of his aides are already in custody. He cannot be judge, jury, and executioner. He should submit himself for investigation,” Adeyanju urged.
El-Rufai, for his part, alleged that National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu ordered a directive targeting him, claiming, “Ribadu made the call… they gave the order that they should arrest me.”
However, El-Rufai has confirmed on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle that he intends to comply with the ICPC invitation. “Yesterday, after the futile attempt to abduct me, the ICPC delivered a letter inviting me to their office. My lawyer has written to confirm that I will be attending the ICPC office on Wednesday, 18 February 2026,” he stated.
The incident underscores ongoing tensions between former political leaders and Nigeria’s security agencies, while highlighting the importance of cooperating with lawful investigations.
