Secret Promotions Rock Nigeria Police As Officers Accuse IGP Egbetokun Of Favoritism

By SUNTV Global Channel | February 4, 2026

Fresh controversy has engulfed the Nigeria Police Force following allegations of a covert and irregular promotion exercise allegedly approved by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, sparking renewed outrage within the ranks.

At the centre of the storm is the promotion of the Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), Ben Hundeyin, who was elevated from Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) to Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), reportedly ahead of several officers senior to him.

The Nigeria Police Force on Tuesday officially announced Hundeyin’s promotion, stating that it was approved on the recommendation of the IGP. Hundeyin, who assumed office as FPRO in 2025 as a CSP, succeeded Deputy Commissioner of Police Olumuyiwa Adejobi.

However, multiple police sources told SUNTV Global Channel that the promotion was carried out discreetly and allegedly outside established procedures, fueling resentment among officers who believe merit and seniority were sidelined.

The controversy has deepened with allegations surrounding the promotion of another officer, Gloria Obiageli Obakpolor, who was reportedly elevated from Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) to Superintendent of Police (SP). Insiders claim the promotion was irregular and linked to a personal relationship with the IGP dating back to his tenure as Commandant of the Police College, Lagos.

A senior police source alleged that Ms. Obakpolor had previously faced internal hostility from Yemisi Bukola Kuti, a senior aide to the IGP whose own controversial promotion in 2025 had triggered widespread unrest within Police Headquarters.

According to sources, Obakpolor’s husband was also dismissed from the Nigeria Police Force under circumstances some officers privately attribute to personal interests connected to the IGP’s office. Ms. Obakpolor is currently posted to the Budget Section at Force Headquarters, where she reportedly serves as an accountant.

The latest allegations have reportedly reignited internal rivalries within the Force, coming shortly after the contentious elevation of ACP Bukola Kuti, which many officers describe as a turning point in what they see as a growing crisis of confidence in the police leadership.

Tensions escalated further after Ms. Obakpolor publicly announced her promotion on social media three days ago, stating that it had been backdated and asserting seniority over officers promoted in December. The post circulated widely among police personnel, intensifying accusations of favoritism and abuse of procedure.

Sources also disclosed that following sustained investigative reports and public scrutiny, including coverage by SaharaReporters, the police hierarchy initiated multiple criminal cases against journalist and publisher Omoyele Sowore, including at least three cybercrime-related charges allegedly linked to reports on ethical concerns surrounding the IGP’s office.

As of the time of filing this report, Police Headquarters had not issued any official statement addressing the allegations of secret promotions or the growing discontent within the Force.

Meanwhile, calls are mounting for transparency, an independent review of recent promotion exercises, and accountability at the highest levels of the Nigeria Police Force, as confidence among officers continues to wane.
