Passengers travelling along the Kabba–Obajana highway in Kogi State were thrown into panic late Tuesday night after suspected terrorists launched a deadly attack on vehicles heading toward Lagos, leaving at least three people dead and several others injured.
One of the survivors, identified on social media as Móráyọ̀ (@MORADUNNI), recounted the terrifying ordeal, explaining that the bus she boarded from Jos to Lagos was ambushed around midnight by armed attackers who opened fire from both sides of the road.
According to her account, passengers initially thought the sounds were something else until bullets began hitting the vehicle.
“At first we didn’t realise what was happening until gunshots started coming from both sides of the road. They targeted the driver and kept firing at the bus,” she wrote on X.
The gunmen reportedly shattered the bus’s side mirror and shot at its tyres, forcing passengers to drop to the floor in fear as the attack intensified.
“Everyone laid down praying while a man beside me was shot in the leg,” she added.
Despite the barrage of gunfire, the driver managed to keep control of the vehicle and drove through the ambush, eventually escaping the attackers.
The passengers later stopped at a nearby village where residents rushed to assist the injured traveler and helped the group while they waited for a replacement tyre.
However, another bus travelling behind them was not as fortunate. According to the survivor, the second vehicle suffered a more severe attack, leaving several passengers wounded and at least three people killed.
“Sadly, another bus behind us was hit harder. Several people were injured and three were killed. It was a terrifying experience,” she wrote.
The incident has once again raised serious concerns about security on the Kabba–Obajana road, a major route linking northern and southern parts of Nigeria that has become notorious for bandit attacks and kidnappings.
Travelers have repeatedly warned about the dangers along the corridor, with many reporting frequent ambushes by armed groups operating in the area.
As of the time of this report, security agencies have yet to release an official statement regarding the attack.
