A tragic incident has shaken residents of Ogun State after armed soldiers allegedly shot and killed a government town planning official during a routine enforcement operation.
The victim, identified as Oluwaseyi Adeoye, was part of an ad-hoc enforcement team from the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development. The team had visited a private property belonging to Ganic Company located along the Sagamu–Abeokuta Expressway in Orile-Imo, within Obafemi/Owode Local Government Area.
According to eyewitness accounts, the officials were at the site to demolish a perimeter fence said to have violated approved building regulations. The enforcement team was reportedly accompanied by police officers to maintain order during the exercise.
However, the situation escalated when heavily armed soldiers guarding the property confronted the officials and resisted the demolition.
Sources told SUNTV Global Channel that a heated argument broke out between the soldiers, the enforcement officers, and accompanying police personnel. The confrontation quickly turned violent when the soldiers allegedly opened fire indiscriminately.
Adeoye was fatally shot in the chaos, while other officials and officers fled the scene to avoid further casualties.
One town planner who spoke anonymously described the incident as shocking and avoidable.
“The soldiers should have exercised restraint. They shot sporadically and even confronted the police officers. Many people could have died if others had not run for safety,” the source said.
The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Tunji Odulami, confirmed the incident and expressed deep concern.
He stated that authorities have contacted military leadership to identify the personnel involved and ensure accountability.
“This should never have happened. We are working with all relevant security agencies to ensure due process is followed,” he said.
Police Investigation Underway
The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed that an investigation has been launched. Police spokesperson Oluseyi Babaseyi said efforts are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Meanwhile, the deceased’s body has been deposited at the State General Hospital morgue in Ijaye, Abeokuta.
