A cargo vessel travelling through the highly strategic Strait of Hormuz has been struck by an unidentified projectile, sparking a fire onboard and forcing its crew to abandon the ship in a dramatic evacuation.
According to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), the attack occurred on Wednesday in waters just north of Oman, along one of the world’s most vital shipping corridors.
The British military-run maritime security agency confirmed that the projectile impact ignited a blaze aboard the cargo vessel, creating a dangerous situation that compelled the crew to evacuate while emergency assistance was requested.
UKMTO said the vessel was “hit just north of Oman in the strait,” adding that the crew had begun abandoning the ship as the fire spread.
Strategic Waterway Under Threat
The Strait of Hormuz, which connects the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea, is one of the most important maritime passages in the world.
Energy analysts estimate that nearly one-fifth of the world’s oil and natural gas shipments pass through the narrow channel daily, making any security incident there a major concern for global trade and energy markets.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far. However, tensions in the Gulf region have remained high, with Iran previously accused of targeting commercial vessels in and around the strait during periods of geopolitical friction.
Another Vessel Reportedly Targeted
The incident follows an earlier alert issued by UKMTO regarding another suspected attack on a vessel near Ras Al‑Khaimah, part of the United Arab Emirates. Authorities have not yet disclosed the extent of damage or whether there were casualties in that case.
Maritime security agencies are currently monitoring the situation closely as shipping companies review the risks of navigating the volatile Gulf waters.
Iran–US Tensions Escalate
Meanwhile, Iran has rejected accusations that it attempted to close the Strait of Hormuz, describing such claims as “baseless and absurd.”
In a statement released by Iran Mission to the United Nations, Tehran insisted it remains committed to international maritime law and freedom of navigation.
The statement also accused the United States Navy of sinking the Iranian frigate IRIS Dena in international waters during a recent incident that reportedly killed more than 100 sailors.
Iran described the alleged strike as a serious violation of international law and maritime norms.

With multiple security alerts now emerging from the Gulf region, maritime authorities warn that the latest attack could heighten fears for commercial shipping passing through the strategic energy corridor.
International shipping operators and naval forces are continuing to monitor developments as rescue operations and investigations into the projectile strike remain underway.
