Concerns are mounting in Mokwa, Niger State, after reports emerged that a newly constructed culvert, built to replace the collapsed Mokwa Bridge, is already showing visible cracks and signs of deterioration.
The project, reportedly funded with ₦16.7 billion approved by the Federal Government, was intended to restore a key transport link destroyed by flooding in 2025. However, residents now say the structure delivered on site falls far short of expectations and appears structurally weak.
Community members allege that instead of the originally announced multi-span bridge, a culvert was constructed at the location, raising questions about the scope, quality, and execution of the project.
One resident expressed concern over the early signs of damage, warning that the structure may not withstand the next heavy rainfall season. According to local accounts, visible cracks have already appeared on sections of the culvert, sparking fear of a possible collapse or another community isolation if flooding intensifies.
“We expected a proper bridge as announced by the government, but what we are seeing is far below expectations. People are worried because the cracks are already visible,” a resident said.
Traders and transport operators in the area have also raised alarm, noting that the region remains highly flood-prone and requires a durable engineering solution rather than what they describe as a “temporary-looking structure.”
Another community source questioned the disparity between the approved budget and the final construction outcome, demanding transparency from authorities and contractors involved in the project.
The Federal Government had earlier announced approval for the reconstruction of a 10-span bridge at Mokwa, following the destruction of the previous structure by floods. Officials had described the intervention as a major infrastructure commitment aimed at restoring connectivity in Niger State.
However, the latest development has triggered renewed scrutiny, with residents urging urgent inspection and intervention before the situation worsens.
As of press time, there has been no official response from the Ministry of Works or the project contractors regarding the reported cracks or allegations raised by the community.
