Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has strongly condemned the alleged attack on former Anambra State governor Peter Obi and former APC national chairman John Odigie-Oyegun in Edo State, describing the incident as a serious threat to democratic values.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the Kogi Central lawmaker warned that politics must never deteriorate into violence, intimidation, or harassment of opposition figures.
According to her, the reported incident reflects a troubling trend of “overzealous political actors” allegedly targeting opponents in an attempt to impress powerful leaders.
“This development is deeply disturbing and has no place in our democracy,” she said. “Politics must never descend into violence, intimidation, or threats against perceived opponents.”
She further cautioned that attempts to silence opposition voices are dangerous to national unity and undermine democratic principles.
Akpoti-Uduaghan stressed that democracy thrives on healthy competition and the protection of dissenting opinions, noting that opposition politicians have a constitutional right to organise and carry out activities without fear.
She also called on security agencies to immediately investigate the alleged attack and ensure that anyone found responsible faces justice.
“Nigeria must remain a nation where political differences are resolved through dialogue and the ballot, not violence,” she added.
Background Tensions
The controversy comes months after Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), publicly warned Peter Obi against visiting the state without prior notice.
In July 2025, the governor stated that Obi’s security could not be guaranteed if he entered Edo without informing him, a remark that sparked national debate at the time.
He also questioned the source of a reported ₦15 million donation Obi made during a previous visit, claiming unrest allegedly followed the trip.
Call for Rule of Law
Akpoti-Uduaghan, who has faced political battles in Kogi State, reaffirmed her commitment to democratic ideals, stating that every Nigerian — regardless of political affiliation — deserves safety and protection under the law.
