An Ekiti State Chief Magistrate Court has ordered the remand of Akogun Abayomi Olumide, popularly known as “Lustay,” in correctional custody over allegations of attempted murder, armed robbery and other serious offences.
Olumide, who recently filed a suit at the Federal High Court in Abuja challenging the candidature of Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, was remanded following an application by the Nigeria Police, pending legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
According to court proceedings monitored by SUNTV Global Channel, Olumide was arraigned on allegations bordering on conspiracy to commit robbery, armed robbery, attempted murder, unlawful possession of offensive weapons and malicious damage. The court also noted that the charges involve other suspects who are currently at large.
Police documents presented to the court allege that Olumide was involved in violent attacks on several prominent individuals, including Chief Sunday Adeola, Chief Joseph Falope, Kilani Oyebamiji and Oloruntimileyin Akintunde.
However, the defendant has strongly denied the allegations. In a statement made at the police station, Olumide insisted that he is not a robber and does not belong to any criminal gang. He also denied claims that he imported or hired armed thugs to attack political opponents in Ekiti State.
Olumide explained that on October 9, 2025, he travelled to Ado-Ekiti as part of the convoy of Engineer Kayode Ojo, who was in the state to declare his governorship ambition at the All Progressives Congress (APC) Secretariat.
“I never attempted to shoot anyone to death as alleged,” he reportedly told investigators, adding that he had no knowledge of any alleged importation of fake police officers into the state.
In an affidavit in support of the remand application, sworn by Inspector Ilori Tope of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Ado-Ekiti, the police stated that Olumide was arrested on January 1, 2026, after investigations revealed reasonable grounds linking him to the alleged offences.
The investigating officer informed the court that statements from both the complainants and the suspect, along with Form K, were attached as exhibits to support the application.
Following a motion ex parte dated January 2, 2026, the police requested an order remanding the defendant at the Ado-Ekiti Correctional Centre pending the issuance of legal advice.
The Chief Magistrate Court granted the application and ordered that Olumide be remanded in custody while investigations continue and the DPP reviews the case.
