The Elegant Nurses Forum has strongly condemned what it described as sustained threats, intimidation, and serious human rights violations against a whistleblower nurse, Rufus Mojisola, in Kwara State.
In a statement issued on Friday, the forum accused authorities of victimising Mojisola for what it called her commitment to professional ethics, patient safety, and truth. The statement was signed by Nurse Thomas Abiodun Olamide on behalf of the Elegant Nurses Forum.
According to the group, Mojisola was allegedly subjected to an illegal and dangerous transfer to a healthcare facility said to be affected by terrorist activities, a move the forum described as a deliberate attempt to endanger her life.
The forum further alleged that the nurse was later attacked by suspected thugs, believed to be acting on behalf of local government interests. It claimed she was eventually forced to resign after threats were reportedly directed at her father.
Describing the situation as a “grave violation of fundamental human rights and professional dignity,” the forum said the treatment meted out to Mojisola reflects a growing culture of intimidation against nurses who speak out against wrongdoing.
The Elegant Nurses Forum also criticised the Kwara State Chairman of the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), alleging that his failure to act despite reported threats raised concerns about possible compromise within the state leadership of the union.
“It is increasingly obvious that the Kwara State Government is indirectly aiding and abetting criminal acts, thereby fostering a climate of fear, oppression, and intimidation,” the forum stated.
The group warned that such actions undermine healthcare delivery, noting that intimidation of nurses negatively affects morale, ethical independence, and ultimately worsens morbidity and mortality rates.
Among its demands, the forum called for the immediate nullification of Mojisola’s resignation, which it said was obtained under duress, as well as the full payment of all outstanding salaries, allowances, and arrears owed to her.
It also demanded credible security guarantees for nurses and midwives in Kwara State, particularly whistleblowers, and the reversal of what it described as illegal, punitive, and unsafe postings of healthcare workers.
The forum further called for an independent investigation into the alleged threats, attacks, and the possible involvement of local and state actors. It urged the National Secretariat of NANNM to intervene, citing what it described as evidence of compromise at the state level.
The statement also appealed for a formal public assurance from the Kwara State Government guaranteeing non-retaliation against nurses who speak out, alongside broader institutional reforms to protect whistleblowers in the health sector.
The Elegant Nurses Forum warned that if its demands are not met within 72 hours, it will escalate the matter to national and international bodies, including the International Council of Nurses, the United Nations, the United States Embassy, and other human rights organisations.
“We reaffirm our unwavering solidarity with Nurse Rufus Mojisola and all nurses facing oppression for standing on the side of truth,” the statement concluded. “An injury to one nurse is an injury to all. We will continue to demand justice, accountability, and safety for healthcare workers and the patients they serve.”
