The Federal Government of Nigeria has advised Nigerian nationals and business owners in to temporarily shut down their businesses following a fresh wave of xenophobic violence and protests targeting foreign-owned shops in several cities.
The advisory was issued through the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), based on a circular from the Nigerian Consulate in Johannesburg, as tensions reportedly escalate across major South African urban centres including Cape Town, Durban, East London, and parts of KwaZulu-Natal.
According to officials, the unrest has led to looting, destruction of property, and targeted attacks on foreign nationals, with Nigerians among those affected.
NiDCOM stated that the precautionary measure is aimed at safeguarding lives and preventing further losses, urging Nigerians to avoid flashpoints and remain indoors during the period of heightened tension.
The commission also advised business owners to close operations temporarily during the planned protest dates, including April 27–29, as intelligence reports suggest further demonstrations could escalate violence.
Despite the rising tension, authorities clarified that there are no immediate plans for evacuation, although that option remains open if the situation deteriorates further.
Government officials also confirmed ongoing diplomatic engagement between Nigeria and South African authorities to address the crisis and ensure the safety of Nigerian citizens.
The President of the Nigerian community in South Africa, Smart Nwobi, expressed concern over the renewed hostility, warning that migrants are increasingly being targeted due to economic frustrations and unemployment tensions within local communities.
He called on both governments to strengthen dialogue and protect foreign nationals from further attacks, stressing that innocent migrants are being unfairly blamed for domestic challenges.
The latest unrest has sparked renewed fears among African migrants, as videos circulating on social media show harassment, assaults, and intimidation of foreign nationals in affected areas.
Officials say Nigerian consular services in Johannesburg remain active and are working closely with local authorities to monitor the situation and respond to emergencies.
