The Ogun State Police Command has arrested eight suspected Yoruba Nation agitators over alleged acts of unlawful assembly, obstruction of traffic and assault on police officers in parts of Sango-Ota, Ogun State.
According to a statement released on Friday by the Police Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, the arrests followed reports of public disturbance at Temidire Junction and the Sango-Ota under-bridge.
Babaseyi said the suspects were members of a group identifying as the “Democratic Republic of the Yoruba,” which allegedly barricaded major roads, lit bonfires and disrupted the free movement of motorists and pedestrians in the area.
“Upon receiving the report, police operatives were swiftly deployed to the scene, where they dispersed the group and restored normalcy,” the police spokesperson said.
Those arrested were identified as Adewale Sosanya, Opeyemi Oladotun, Zara Gabriel, Ajoke Gabriel, Adewale Adebomojo, Yusuf Tanimowo, Olurotimi Ademola and Toyin Gabriel.
Items recovered from the suspects include a Toyota Dyna vehicle reportedly used to convey them, two public address systems, a carton of flags and T-shirts bearing agitational inscriptions, as well as banners displaying messages and a manifesto linked to the group.
The police said investigations are ongoing and that the suspects will be charged to court once the probe is concluded.
Babaseyi also quoted the Commissioner of Police in Ogun State, Lanre Ogunlowo, as reaffirming the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property across the state.
The commissioner warned that the police would not tolerate actions capable of breaching public peace, stressing that any assault on security personnel would attract decisive response.
Residents were urged to remain law-abiding and promptly report suspicious activities through the command’s emergency lines.
